Reflect 2

I will like to reflect on   DO GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES MATTER IN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN?*
Firstly, I must accept that my poor English “kill” a lot of my time and energy to understand the such terrible long essay.
In the part of GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES ACROSS GENDER, RACE, & SES (socioeconomic status). I will like to highlight that:
1)      Sayer, Folbre, and Matheson (2003), found that as women’s income approached that of their male spouses, there was more likely to be an equitable sharing of housework within families. They also found, however, that where traditional income relationships persisted (men making more money than women), women tended to do a larger share of the household jobs.
2)      Shelton and Shelton (2005) concluded that a significant number of Generation X women were leaving the workforce or lowering their expectations for career advancement in light of the barriers they perceived.
3)      The same survey found that positive relationships with colleagues, interesting work, and continuous opportunities for learning were listed as the top three workplace attractors for Generation X women whereas recognition, power and prestige, and salary were ranked near the bottom (Fisher, 2006).
4)      Loo and Thorpe (1998) also found that Gen Xers were much more liberal about gender roles than Baby Boomers.
There are something different happen from time to time. I will like to see that egalitarianism between man and women toward a bright future. Even the process is slow, but better than less compare with the past. This phenomena may because of the women  awake to their right play the important role. The world can’t deny that women play the important part and contributed a lot to the society and the world, whereas quick spreading of information also help to speedup it.
In the statement of :
1)      There is an ongoing debate between those who believe that the Net Gen is fundamentally different from previous generations in ways that require new approaches to teaching and learning and those who believe that how people learn is not fundamentally affected by generational membership. Prensky (2001a)

2)      It is also clear that members of the Net Gen spend more time playing games than Gen Xers and that Gen Xers in turn play more than Baby Boomers (Rideout, Roberts & Foehr, 2005).

There are the reasons we need to take it seriously to look into our T&L. There was a challenge to the teachers to open their mind, to accept the different way how the new generation study. Teacher can’t stick on their old fashion chalk and talk teaching style, most of the students need a leading than a lecturing.

I will like to discuss a little bit about DIFFERENTIAL EFFICACY OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
1)      The scholarly debate among educational researchers and learning theorists about the relative merit of behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and social constructivism continues. Indeed, some argue that this debate is devolving into ideological stances rather than carefully examined theoretical models (Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006).

2)      “Meanwhile, in the real world of business and industrial training, practitioners are likely to change their instructional approaches based primarily on the promotion of the latest and greatest training technologies touted to “revolutionize” training rather than on the basis of dubious learning theory or weak research findings. At the same time, Generation “experts” are making big bucks as consultants who issue recommendations that are also uninformed by strong theory or the findings of sound research.”

3)      Chester (2002) offers the following five basic principles for training the Net Generation without any reference to principles of learning theory or findings from educational research studies:
• Make it fun
• Engage them
• Make it fresh
• Keep up the pace
• Reward skill development

From above statements. Clearly, the teachers need to renew their skill of instructional design in teaching. The world changed, the mind must change! Today’s teachers are more easier to collect the teaching information than the past, but at same time, students are also expose to a lot of new information. That’s why teachers need to have progress in  instructional design to help the students to learn in a comfort condition.

I like to describe about the DIFFERENTIAL EFFICACY OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES.
1)      Wendover (2002) define as the new generation learners (millennials). These students, born after 1980, have grown up with what other generations view as new technologies. They are connected (mostly to each other) and proficient in the use of communicative technology, often viewing what transpires in college classrooms as slow-moving and uninteresting.

2)      students in well-designed and well-implemented online courses learned significantly more, and more effectively, than those in online courses where teaching and learning activities were not carefully planned and where the delivery and accessibility were impeded by technology problems.

From the statement, I am agree that communicative technology are fast spread into our Malaysian society.  Today, most of the family have their computer system and also with the broadband system, our student can easily find the information about the knowledge they are going to learn. They may better than some teacher like me, they are quick to use the communicative technology than me. Some time I am also need  to ask them questions and help. Because of online activities hidden with some dangers, we as a teacher need to learn the technology by now because we need to protect the student and also to guide them to choose and use the communicative technology carefully and safely.

MOVING ON TOWARD THE BETTER T&L

Firstly, i feel so hard to finish all the work because this week was so busy with a lot of school work, every day i was back to home with the flat out body. I was worry that  i can't finish the reflection by this week, especially the video Clip reflection.
Lastly, it come out after many times to watch and try to understand what is John Seely Brown's Lecture on Learning in the Digital Age. frankly speaking, that because i am weak in the language. how ever, i will try to copy down the main point and try to remix with my opinion and share to you all.
world change, in this 21st century T&L skill must be change. The delivery model on teaching that teacher teach and student learn can't fully effectily help student to absord a huge information about the learning, i am agree that we need to apply the new way to cultivate the neat rows of disciplinary knowledge to lead the student to study with the peer base-learning concept.
Compare with the homework and exam preparation, i more like the student to study through the collaborative study group because the social construction of understanding is real. students create & join group study will learn the knowledge through social constructing and i am sure they will feel fun when sharing and helping each other. i am thinking now is the time we need to change the teacher's role play, we need to change our mind set to turn every one being the learner and a teacher at same time, from my experience there were a lot of thing we not know but students are better with us. This is a fact!
To me, i always feel i get more knowledge when i had teach a single thing to student. Through it,  my memory on that knowledge are more longer than i just read it myself. that why i always encourage my student to do the group study because i am agree that nothing clarifies idea better than the other. but one thing we need to aware is technology not the whole way in T&L but the pedagogy play more important role. So, the technology is only a tool but the teacher play the role to lead the student and build up the learning enviroment.
Teacher in this century need to play the role as a mentor or facilitator to help the student to find out their potential, among the peer base-learning community, student can change their focus on learning about to learning to be. i am agree on it because i believe human potential is huge and out of our imagination. student can find out the problem or error and learn to solve it if they know they are not just learning about but learning to be.
i am agree that was important to believe that open source as a participatory learning platform for students to learn through open code, open system, open community dicussions. that bis new ways for student to engage in study and research, and that is new forms of peer review and turn the view into a practice to help student to really understand the knowledge they learned.
new reading pratices are call for the change because technology will accompany you to practice. There were figuring between authority or timelines, teacher are not longer been the source of knowledge, there were a lot of information in wikepedia that only need student's finger to type or click on the knowledge they like to know, and it did finesses the quesstion of quality learning.
we are live in the Digital Age, learning culture are now base on  participation by builing, tinkering, remixing and sharing. there was the producing the idea with following by consuming it, the creating meaning by oneself produce and others build on will construct a remix and open source culture. students can sharing their new knowledge through the blog writing, facebook and etc, they also can comment to the other, through the creative tinkering and play of imagination, they can mix up, remix and mash up their ideas.
We need to think the need to modulate the teaching knowledge and skill, from used the tools and scaffolding to teach we need to figure to hybrid the pedagogy with technology to build up the possion on peer base-learning. A blended epistemology to build up a relation between a man as a knower with a man as make is not enough. we need to apply a pedagogical blended to ensure that the student not only learn from who sage on the stage but peer-base learning to help them to continuous learning through social networking.
there were a relation of three epistemology about knowing, making and playing. Because of learning is a riddle, i am agree to nomo ludens's concept that students are encourage to learn by themself through playing. they will feel fun when they are given a freedom to do the try, even they may fail for several times. their mind was free when they are playing, so they may creative something new to help their learning. with the new technology, either of hardware or software can help students to learn and discover the new things. with the supporting of network development, student can knowing, making and playing the learning process through you tube, wikipedia, blogger, facebook, twister and etc, but the tinkering is important to help the effective learning.
Teacher can't stick on fogyish pedagogy, we need to move on toward to the revolution  of education, we need to learn and prepare ourself because we play more role then before.
